Wireless providers are proving to be a boon for many, especially most of the smaller cell phone service providers. The system works simply on the principle of linking up a fixed broadband line to a central antenna site. Cell phone carriers, long a behemoth in urban areas, are fast facing the competition in rural areas by these service providers. These alternatives wireless cell phone service providers are using the Wi-Max system (an off spin from the Wi-Fi technology) that can offer a coverage area of 30 miles; which typically is the size of a city. Most customers are shifting over to such a carrier as, leaving aside price comparison, which are marginal, these smaller wireless service carriers provide an efficient backup service to their customers. This type of service allows the carriers to mix hardware of different manufacturers, resulting in prices falling and this will attract the large firms of long distance, local and wireless to join the market. Typically, most of these wireless service carriers mainly use their services for data transmission at the moment. Cell phone signal carriers of cities have their apprehension on the costs issues as air space in cities are licensed out and come with a heavy fee for operation. Nevertheless, to cater to the growing demand, Intel has plans to install Wi-Max compatible chips onto upcoming cells and laptops to provide a larger realm of uses for the users. Larger companies are buying up smaller niche firms in this line to allow it to provide signals to customers’ phones while they commute between cities and rural areas. A mobile communication carrier has the advantage over cells as their hardware are better equipped to provide voice traffic over phones. This allows a carrier a monopoly of business in a certain niche and is thus attempting to buy out these smaller firms who provide data services to cells and landline phone through an antenna in rural areas.
