US Cellular - an original American cell phone

The vast majority of US cellular phones today are designed for use only in the United States. As anyone who travels abroad knows once they leave the United States the cell phone is rendered almost useless. Interestingly, Europeans and Asians and Africans do not experience the same problem with their cell phone network.

In the mid-1980s, Europe developed the GSM digital wireless network which was used in Asia, the Pacific Rim, and Africa to transmit both data and voice. This network was run via removable SIM (subscriber identification module) circuit boards inserted into GSM cell phones to enable connectivity. US cellular ring tones and other features are specific only to US cell phones making them redundant for other brands of cell phones also.

At about the same time, US cellular phones were developed using a different network under a different design and technology. In the United States any provider was free to use any type of technology they decided to use. This meant there was no uniformity like in the European nations. This means that if you buy a cell phone and a cell phone plan in the United States and then you decide to change providers, you need to buy a new phone. If you leave the country, you need to leave your US cellular phone behind because they're useless - unless you want to pay from $1 to $7 a minute - almost everywhere else – with the global roaming technology.
