The mobile phone battery is similar to the heart of a man – once it stops pumping, the body is useless. But unlike a human heart, we can easily discard the old battery and put in a new one. That is why a phone battery is considered only as one of the cell phone accessories. The most commonly available cell phone batteries are lithium-ion, nickel cadmium and nickel metal hydride based, commonly referred to as Li-ion, Ni-Cd and NiMH respectively. Being rechargeable (not to mention that there are mobiles running on standard batteries) these batteries are pushed to the extent of its capabilities, especially in the higher end mobile, where Li-ion is the preferred choice. Mobile phones are constantly being redesigned to improve the circuitry so as to minimize the power consumption of the cellular phones. As a matter of fact, it’s been shown that smaller, lighter batteries (usually Li-ion based) give a longer service life, averaging more than 1000 charge-discharge cycles. The reason why Ni-Cd and NiMH are being phased out is because it’s been shown in tests that these Ni based accessories have a condition termed as “voltage depression”. Simply put, if one does not fully discharge the Ni-Cd cell before recharging it, what happens then after such few cycles is that the battery then recognizes this lower water mark, and learns to act as if it is discharged at this point henceforth. As such, these cellular mobile phones batteries need a charger that does not unnecessarily drain the power nor damage the cell phones. Hence, always check and verify all the specifications of the accessories and its compatibility with another accessory. Practice this or your only means of cellular communication might just become a thing of the past.
